Preserved relics of the Solovetsky Monastery
In the Exhibition Hall of the Assumption Belfry - a part of the Moscow
Kremlin Museum - opened an exhibition "Preserved relics of the Solovetsky
Monastery". This exposition revives the tradition of displaying exhibits
from the funds of the Moscow Kremlin Museum. For the first time the
exhibition presents over 100 masterpieces from the Solovetsky Monastery - a
richest depository containing genuine relics of the Russian culture and
Orthodox Church, preserved by several generations of museum staff. This
exhibition in Moscow Kremlin was preceded by a large-scale research
conducted by the research teams of the museum's departments, such as "Armory
Chamber", "Museums-Cathedrals", and the department of manuscripts, printed
and graphic materials. The exhibition will be open until September 19, 2001.

Art of jewelry of the 20th century. Russia - USSR - Russia
The All-Russian Museum of Decorative, Applied and Folk Arts is running an
exhibition "Art of Jewelry of the 20th Century. Russia - USSR - Russia". The
exhibition presents several thousand displays from the Museum's collection
and pieces by different authors, which graphically illustrate the history of
the world art of jewelry starting from the end of the 19th to the beginning
of the 20th centuries and to the present days. Along with the jewelry
rarities of the Russian pre-Revolution period - works by the famous jewelers
Faberge, Ovchinnikov, Khlebnikov, Grachev brothers, and others, the
exhibition for the first time displays unique works by Soviet authors,
including those of the 20s - 50s, which have not been seen not only by the
general public, but even by Russian jewelry experts, and which in many ways
change the conventional concept of the Russian jewelry of the 20th century.
The diversity of the exhibition's materials and subjects is intended to suit
various tastes - from those of classics lovers to admirers of avant-garde in
jewelry.

Cartoon and caricature by A.P. Malishevsky
The State Museum of Contemporary Russian History invites you to visit the
exhibition "Metropolitan Life at the Turn of Two Eras", presenting graphic
art by A.P. Malishevsky (1898-1933). The exhibition rescues from underserved
oblivion the name of a graphic artist who painted cartoons and caricatures
reflecting various aspects of life in the 20s and 30s of the past 20th
century. A.P. Malishevsky, who had a short, but stormy life, found the
subjects for his works among the realities of his time. The exhibition shows
the diversity of his graphic techniques from refined works in the late Art
Nouveau style to experiments in cubism and futurism, and from genre
paintings to cartoons and caricatures. Several paintings displayed at the
exhibition will be donated by the artist's heirs to the museum as a gift.

Exhibition "Sport, politics and politicians"
The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the State Central Museum
of Contemporary History of Russia, and the Russian Olympic Committee present
the exhibition "Sport, politics and politicians". Sport as a prestigious
sphere of our life, loved and admired by lots of people, has always been
connected with politics. In contemporary Russia sport and politics are
closely connected with each other. Leaders of our country nowadays not only
watch sport competitions from government's boxes, but appear themselves on
tennis courts, football fields, or tatami. Sport has become a mode of life
of a successful politician, a characteristic of his image. However sportsmen
themselves are not strangers to politics, actively participating in the
country's public and political life.

Under the roof of the Winter Palace
Visitors to the web site of the State Hermitage Museum
(www.hermitagemuseum.org) can have a look at a new on-line exhibition
dedicated to the Program for the development of the attics in the Hermitage
Museum building. A special exposition was prepared for the day of the
Program presentation. The total area of all attics in the building exceeds
thirty thousand square meters. Structural units of the attics have
historical value, commemorating achievements of technical and engineering
science of the past . Traces of multiple reconstructions, marks from the
time of the Great Patriotic War have in a way become a chronicle telling us
about the country's history, about former inhabitants of the Palace, and
about construction technologies used in different centuries. At present the
Hermitage Museum is working out plans involving the premises development and
turning them into museums. The attics space can be used as exhibition and
lecture halls, clubs, cafes and small restaurants. By now the Museum has
drawn up a plan of a tour which would help people learn more about the
attics in the Winter Palace. The exhibition which was open for the public
for several days only can now be only seen on the Museum's web site.

Pablo Picasso, "Moulin de la Galette", 1900
July 10 - September 21, 2001. Exhibition from the collection of Solomon
Guggenheim Museum, New York. The opening ceremony of an exhibition from the
"Masterpieces from world museums at the Hermitage" series took place on July
10, 2001. The painting by Pablo Picasso is displayed in a new exhibition
hall located in the eastern wing of the Chief Headquarters building which
was transferred to the museum in 1993. "Moulin de la Galette" is the first
picture painted by Picasso in Paris, which determined the direction of the
young artist's creative work for many years to follow. The "little Goya",
who came to Paris to conquer the capital of European art, was just about
nineteen when he painted this earliest masterpiece of his. Picasso who had
by then already won recognition in his home country came to Paris to attend
the World Fair, where his canvas "The Last Instants" was displayed in the
Spanish section. The artist dwelt on Montmartre, where a whole Catalonia
colony had settled down. Just a little time passed from the day when Picasso
had arrived in Paris to the creation of this somber, bravura canvas showing
a Montmartre dancing at Moulin de la Gallete. There is no doubt that Picasso
had seen Renoir's "The Ball at the Moulin de la Galette" (1876, Musee
D'Orsay, Paris), and his painting was created as an antithesis to that
apotheosis of impressionism. Picasso who tended to defy impressionism was
influenced by late 19th century artists - T. Steinlen, Van Gogh with his
"The Dance Hall in Arle" (1888, Musee D'Orsay, Paris), and especially by
Toulouse-Lautrec with his canvasses "Ball at Moulin de la Galette" (1889,
Institute or Arts, Chicago) and "At the Moulin-Rouge" (1890, Museum of Arts,
Philadelphia).

Auguste Renoir. "Sisters" ("On the Terrace")
An exhibition from the collection of the Chicago Institute of Arts, July 3 -
September 16, 2001. The exhibition organized within the framework of the
project "Masterpieces from World Museums at the Hermitage" presents
"Sisters" - a culmination of Renoir's creative work and a most popular
painting from the collection of the Chicago Institute of Arts. The second
name of this painting "On the Terrace" was given to it by the
impressionists' patron and benefactor Paul Duran-Ruel, the first long-time
owner of this painting. Renoir must have agreed with this name, especially
taking into consideration that the persons in the portrait actually were no
relatives at all. The canvas was painted in Chatou, a small town near Paris,
where the hotel "Fournaise" - the artist's favorite retreat - is located.
Renoir and his friends regarded Chatou as the ideal place for repose.
Perhaps due to this fact "Sisters" belongs to the works radiating the joy of
life characteristic for the French - the joy so ably glorified by the
impressionists. Renoir is believed to begin "Sisters" in April 1881; in the
spring of 1882 the painting was showed to the public at the seventh
exhibition of impressionists together with such masterpieces by Renoir as
"The Girl with a Fan" (now owned by the Hermitage), "The Girl with a Cat",
"An Opera Box" (Clark Institute, Williamstown), and "Rowers Breakfast"
(Phillips Collection, Washington). It is not yet known from whom the younger
sister was painted, but for the elder posed an actress Jeanne D'Arlot
(1863-1914).

Spinning wheels and toys at a Russian Museum exhibition
From July 6, 2001 the Benua Building in St. Petersburg will house two
exhibitions: "Dymkovo Toys" and "Russian spinning wheels". An Honored Artist
of Russia Lidiya Sergeevna Falaleeva has been making traditional Dymkovo
toys over several dozens of years. Her creative work is characterized by an
individual, pronounced style. L. Falaleeva is a master of multi-figure
compositions, some of which are displayed at this exhibition. The main part
of the exhibition will be dedicated to the author's works of the last two or
three years. The other exhibition displays about 200 carved and decorated
with designs spinning wheels, made by craftsmen from different regions of
the European part of Russia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibition
also features spinning accessories - spindles, beaters, as well as weaving
samples and pieces of art giving the idea of the image of the Russian
spinner.

Ode to the glass at the Ethnographic Museum
In the Marble Hall of the Russian Ethnographic Museum one can see the
exhibition "Ode to the Glass", which will be open until August 14, 2001.
This year we will celebrate the 290th anniversary of M.V. Lomonosov, the
Russian scientist of encyclopedic knowledge, who by his all-round talents
could be compared to the thinkers of the Revival. A physicist and a poet, a
philologist and an astronomer, a chemist and a geologist, a painter and an
engineer, Lomonosov was an innovator and a pioneer in all these fields.
Among his activities a special place belongs to the glass, which
inexplicably attracted the scientist over the period of many years.
Lomonosov became the founder of the chemistry of glass and of the
glass-making theory. He also discovered secrets of color glass making,
organized production of beads, bugles and color smalts in Ust-Ruditsa, and
revived the forgotten art of ancient Russian mosaics. Lomonosov expressed
his admiration of the glass in the "Letter on the benefits of the glass"
(1752), which was laid in the foundation of the exhibition's concept.
Following the structure of this ode, the exhibits were divided into several
groups, displayed in respective sections.

Exhibition "Russian art of the 20th century"
The State Museum of Arts in Nizhni Novgorod will house an Exhibition
"Russian art of the 20th century" which will be open during the summer. The
exhibition is comprised of several expositions presenting Russian fine arts
of different periods and schools, such as paintings by artists who lived at
the turn of two centuries (Nikolai Korovin, Isaac Levitan, Boris Kustodiev,
Nikolai Rerikh), Russian Avant-Garde (Kzimir Malevich, Vasili Kandinsky,
Mikhail Larionov), art of social realism (Alexander Samokhvalov, Arkadi
Plastov), contemporary art (Ernst Neizvestny, Mikhail Shemyakin). The
exhibition also presents paintings and drawings by local artists.

An underwater vernissage in Yalta
From July 5 the lovers of exotics will be able to attend an underwater
exhibition of paintings and sculpture in Yalta. The Plexiglas drawings and
miniature sculptures are located on the sea bottom. In order to see the
works by local artists, the exotics lovers will have to put on diving
equipment. The unusual vernissage has been organized by the Yalta division
of the National Artists Union of Ukraine and by "Union-Crimea" -a company
engaged in the divers training and services to diving fans. People who are
afraid of the sea abyss can visit the exhibition without getting their feet
wet - there is a big screen on the embankment showing the views from the sea
deeps for them.
