The story of glass counts more than 5000 years, and about 100 years ago it used to be an object of luxury. The collection of art glass of the Armory Museum appeared in the second half of the 18th century and since that time it's been constantly enriched. About 170 exhibits represent the collection in all its variety of genres and forms, and also allow us follow the history of glass perfection and its decoration. This exhibition is a continuation of the cycle "Preserved by Russian Monasteries" which represent artistic and historical reliquiae collected and preserved in the largest monasteries of Russia. The exposition represents reliquiae and rarities connected with imperial dynasties of the Godunovs' and the Romanovs' and preserved in the sacristy of Troitsky Cathedral of Ipatievsky Monastery. Peter Lindberg (born in Germany in 1944) is one of the most famous fashion photographers, prestige prizes winner. The exhibition represents the most well known works (1980-90s) showing his own style in the best way. Lindberg's photographs stand far from typical advertising photograph. Most pictures are black and white - these are classical photo colors giving strictness, preciseness and lucidity to the works. The exhibition is dedicated to the 280-year anniversary of the confirmation of Table of Ranks by Peter the Great. The exhibition gives a possibility to acquaint with the literary materials from the fund of rare books. The exposition also represents illustrations. The sections of the exhibition show how Peter's reforms helped to create a special part of the society - officials. The exposition consists of 415 items, among them there are ancient, Eastern and West-European coins and medals. This is only the smaller part of Mintskabinet collection. Since the 18th century it has been replenished by private collections, monetary finds and archaeological digs. After the fire in 1837 the Hermitage Museum became open to public and in the same century Mintskabinet began to occupy the room in the New Hermitage. Nikolai I ordered to enrich the collection by "compulsory" examples from Russian Mints. After the Revolution in 1917 the collection was enlarged by nationalized private collections and receipts from state institutions. Two big amber panels were installed on the Southern Wall of this hall on 19 February, 2002. Today we can say with assurance that the process of restoration of the Amber Room, which lasted about 25 years, is close to an end and the Amber Room will be opened on 31 May, 2003.
